Mission
The Cumberland County Library System Foundation (PA) supports the programs, services, and innovative initiatives of the Library System and its member libraries. The Foundation also supports the cultural, educational and informational needs of Cumberland County library users and community residents throughout the library system.
Member Libraries
Cumberland County Library System comprises the following member libraries: Amelia S. Givin Free Library (Mount Holly Springs, PA), Bosler Memorial Library (Carlisle, PA), Cleve J. Fredricksen Library (Camp Hill, PA), East Pennsboro Branch Library (Enola, PA), Jeffrey W. and JoAnne R. Coy Public Library (Shippensburg, PA), John Graham Library (Newville, PA), Joseph T. Simpson Public Library (Mechanicsburg, PA), and the New Cumberland Public Library (New Cumberland, PA). The headquarters of the Cumberland County Library System and Foundation is located in Mechanicsburg, PA.
History
The Cumberland County Library System Foundation was established in 2006 to provide financial support and fundraising assistance to the library system and its members. The Library System is federated, with each library responsible for an annual budget. The Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization (EIN 20-8077580 Type 1 supporting organization), governed by a 12-member volunteer board of directors who meet quarterly representing the member libraries and the community at large.
Work
The Foundation supports the library system and its member libraries. In addition, the Foundation is an Educational Improvement Organization (EIO), approved to receive Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) contributions for the Summer Learning and School-Year STEM programs. Finally, the Foundation supports STAR - Service to (Homebound) Adult Readers and Employee of the Month recognitions.
Foundation Accepts EITC Donations
The library system is an approved Educational Improvement Organization and may receive Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) donations from approved businesses. These donations help fund our annual Summer Reading Program for more than 25,000 children each year.
Summer Learning Program - The Summer Learning Program extends the school year for students into the summer months by providing a wide range of activities – at no charge – that are designed to foster a love of reading and strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and learning skills. Research studies have long recognized that children who do not participate in an organized summer reading program actually lose their hard-won reading skills over the summer — sliding back about 3 months in their skills by the time school resumes. By the end of 6th grade, children who have lost their reading skills over the summer could be as much as two years behind their classmates.
School-Year STEM – School-Year STEM is a series of programs and activities designed to foster critical thinking, collaboration, group communication, and evidence gathering and evaluating skills while exploring science, technology, engineering, and math. School-Year STEM programs are offered in the afterschool hours and evening as well as weekends, when public schools are closed and children do not have access to their school libraries.
