Join horror author Thomas Malafarina for an evening of shrieks and screams as he walks you through the process of writing horror. Thomas will be discussing two topics which always seem to be of interest to people he meets during his travels. The first topic is what motivates him to write horror. The second involves how he writes, what methods he uses, and where he finds his inspiration.

Thomas Malafarina is primarily known as an author of horror fiction. He has published numerous horror novels and collections of horror short stories. He has also published a book of often-strange single panel cartoons. In addition, many of Thomas’ stories have appeared in anthologies and e-magazines. Some have been produced and presented for internet podcasts and radio plays as well. Thomas is a retired computer aided manufacturing engineer. He is also an artist, musician, singer, and songwriter. A native of Ashland, PA, he now lives in western Berks County, PA with his wife JoAnne.

Brianna Labuskes is a USA Today, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post best-selling author, who writes historical fiction and psychological thrillers. Jim Minick - Without Warning: A Reading from the Author

Join us on Wednesday, June 14 for a special reading from author Jim Minick from his new book, "Without Warning"!

Without Warning: The Tornado of Udall, Kansas: On May 25th, 1955, an F5 tornado struck Udall, Kansas at 10:35 PM. There was no warning. In roughly three minutes, it destroyed most of the buildings, toppled the water tower, and killed 82 people. The Udall tornado was—and still is—the worst in the history of Kansas. Without Warning: The Tornado of Udall, Kansas tells the story of this town’s destruction and rebuilding through the eyes of those who survived, and this story also provides insights into how we might move forward into our climate changed future. More information about the book can be found here: Without Warning : Nebraska Press (unl.edu)

"WITHOUT WARNING is a page-turning disaster narrative in the tradition of THE PERFECT STORM and ISAAC’S STORM:  spare, vivid, suspenseful, meticulously researched, utterly harrowing.  But the havoc an F5 tornado wrecked on this quintessential Kansas small town in the spring of 1955 is only part of the story here.  By taking the arc all the way from the calm before the storm to the months-long labor of rebuilding and reanimating, Jim Minick has brought an entire community lovingly to life. At heart, this is a book about how what’s best about our country confronts and overcomes the worst of our weather." - David Laskin, author of THE CHILDREN’S BLIZZARD and THE FAMILY

Jim Minick is the author or editor of eight books, including Without Warning: The Tornado of Udall, Kansas (nonfiction), The Intimacy of Spoons (poetry, forthcoming), Fire Is Your Water (novel), and The Blueberry Years: A Memoir of Farm and Family. His work has appeared in many publications, including the New York Times, Poets & Writers, Oxford American, Orion, Shenandoah, Appalachian Journal, Wind, and The Sun. He serves as Coeditor of Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel.

Author Visit - Meet Sophia Nelms

book6:30 pm in the Community Room, Lower Level
Meet Sophia Nelms of Sophia’s at Walden with her new cookbook, From the Kitchen at Sophia’s. Ms. Nelms grew up in a large Greek family in the greater Harrisburg area. Family meals around the table are very important in Greek culture – a tradition of bonding over one of life’s greatest pleasures. Pursuing food as a career was natural for her. After working for others, she opened a bakery stand at the Broad Street Market in Harrisburg, followed by restaurants in Camp Hill and Mechanicsburg.

Always asked by her guests for recipes, she was reluctant to give away her “trade secrets”...until now! In her new cookbook, From the Kitchen at Sophia’s, she shares her favorite recipes and those of her guests.

Join us for a brief presentation regarding the creation of the cookbook; then pick a cookbook up for yourself. Additionally, you will be treated to some fun giveaways. Register by Thursday, September 15 and be entered to win a basket of goodies inspired by the cookbook. The program is FREE. However, cookbooks will be available for purchase and autographed. Registration is open.
