Join us for a special Saturday Curl Up with the Classics discussion of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a 2024 Longwood Gardens Community Read’s choice. “When young Mary Lennox moves into Misselthwaite Manor, she hates it. . . . After uncovering a hidden key, Mary discovers an old, abandoned garden that has a few secrets. With two unexpected friends, Mary is determined to bring the garden back to life.” You must have read or listened to the book to attend. Calling all kids with a sweet tooth & creative mind! Using a selection of fruits and toppings, create a delicious no-bake pie. The most attractive or inventive design will win a prize. This program is in conjunction with the 2023 Longwood Gardens Community Read selection, Bring Me Some Apples and I’ll Make You a Pie: A Story about Edna Lewis by Robbin Gourley.

Mixed Media Craft

Tree craft using mixed media and paper quillingRegistration Required
2nd floor, Meeting Room
Join the Library as we create a one-of-a-kind mixed media tree on canvas. Participants will be guided in using paint, tree bark, and quilled leaves to create these works of art on canvas suitable for display. Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. No experience is necessary. All supplies will be provided, but space is limited and registration is required. This program is part of this year’s Longwood Garden Community Read of The Songs of Trees: Stories from Nature’s Great Connectors by David George Haskell. All participants will be entered in a chance to win tickets to Longwood Gardens.

Longwood Gardens Family Event

Join us April 23rd for a special family program based around the Longwood Gardens book pick, We Planted a Tree. We will read the aforementioned book, and also have activities and experiments involving trees and why they are so important.

This will be a fun, hands-on learning experience for the whole family!

Curl Up with the Classics: The Woodlanders by Thomas Hardy

Join us as we discuss The Woodlanders, a classic novel that compliments this year’s Longwood Gardens Community Read theme of trees. This rivalry between a woodlander and an outsider takes place in the enthralling forest around Little Hintock. Ages 18 and older, please. You must have read or listened to the book to attend. Longwood Gardens Community Read: Terrific Trees

Join us for the Longwood Gardens Community read where we will be reading We Planted a Tree and learning about the importance of trees. Children will learn how trees help the environment by making a tree identification chart, identifying trees near the library and collectively planting a tree on library grounds.
