Simpson Library - Programming and Outreach Assistant
The Joseph T. Simpson Public Library is seeking a Programming and Outreach Assistant to take the library into the community and deliver library services beyond its walls. This position will assist the Adult Programming Coordinator in developing and delivering library programming that responds to the community’s needs and desires for knowledge, understanding, enrichment, entertainment, and connection.
Hours: Part time. 20-25 hours per week. Non-Exempt. Includes daytime, evening, Saturday and Sunday hours. Hours subject to change.
$16 per hour.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma required. Associate’s degree or higher preferred.
- Experience in event planning, professional relationship-building, and customer service.
- Experience working effectively with a wide variety of people and personality types.
- Public library experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license.

Functions and Responsibilities
- Assist in the development and delivery of library programming for adults, whether at the library, at the Learning & Book Sale Center, or out in the community.
- Develop relationships and contacts with other organizations and people in the library service area.
- Provide outreach services to new and existing community partners to educate the public about library programs, services, and collections.
- Assist the Adult Programming Coordinator with administrative tasks such as marketing, program registration, statistics, and attendance records
- Serve as library staff at select programs in the library, at the Learning & Book Sale Center, or out in the community.
- Assist in the evaluation of programming and outreach services
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to create community contacts.
- Ability to enthusiastically represent the library at community events.
- Technological proficiency in a Windows environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to interact with the public and staff in a courteous, friendly, and informative manner both in person and on the telephone.
- Ability to organize materials, time, and establish priorities.
- Ability to provide effective and quality library service in accordance with the library's customer service philosophy.
- Ability to understand and adhere to library policies and procedures.
- Ability to type and use computer equipment (i.e., keyboards, light pens, printers, etc.) and photocopiers.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Physical requirements include the ability to move around the facility, walk, sit, bend, climb, kneel, stoop, lift, and carry. Must be able to stand for at least 4 hours at a time.
- Must be physically capable of handling books, magazines, and other materials; placing materials on carts; pushing carts; shelving and retrieving materials on both high and low shelves; emptying the book drop.
- Use hand and finger motion with enough manual dexterity to use computers and handle library items.
- Duties are performed in surroundings where undesirable physical conditions and hazards are minor and controllable.
- Visual acuity to use research tools in print and in computerized formats.
Employment Clearances
Must have FBI criminal history, Pennsylvania Child Abuse, and Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History clearances that qualify the individual for employment as outlined in the library system’s Employee Clearances policy.
