Beginning in 1998, writer Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series) and artist Alex Ross (Marvels, Kingdom Come) collaborated on a series of graphic novels that would become known collectively as The World's Greatest Super-Heroes. In these stories, Ross and Dini tasked the Justice League with tackling humanity's most intractable problems, such as world hunger, systemic injustice, and instilling hope in the terminally ill. How would these heroes step up to these challenges? Are their abilities at all applicable to these global struggles? How would humans, as individuals and as groups, respond to this direct intervention into their lives? John Arminio (Comix Connection) will discuss how these heroes address the obstacles of our real world and, even when they fall short, demonstrate how empathy and compassion can lead us to a brighter future, even if the challenges of being human will never fully leave us. He will also discuss how Ross and Dini were uniquely suited to this type of story and what sets The World's Greatest Super-Heroes apart from other "super-heroes in the real world" comics like Watchmen or Invincible."
