Bosler’s Birthday Series: Lila’s Window

Bosler's Birthday Series: Lila's Window

If you love local history (and the library, and architecture) join us for the second part of our Bosler’s Birthday Series!

The highlight of the architectural treasure that is The Bosler Memorial Library is the memorial window of the original library building. This stained glass masterpiece is dedicated to the memory of Lila, one of the daughters of J. Herman and Mary Bosler, the founders of the library.  The story behind the window is more complicated and dramatic than is generally thought. The window’s significance, too, seems remote since we take it for granted as part of the old building.  Jeff Wood, a former Board member, will tell the story of the closely-knit Bosler family, Lila’s own brief and tragic life, and how the family chose the window as a way for a town to remember her story.

Jeff Wood and his wife Betsy founded Whistlestop Bookshop 40 years ago.  It still thrives in Bosler’s neighborhood.  He is a Dickinson College graduate and has a Masters in American Studies from Penn State University. For 20 years he delivered The Cumberland County Historical Society’s Fall Lecture Series. He has served on the boards of Bosler, the Historical Society, and the Carlisle Theatre.

Register for Bosler's Birthday Series.

While the economy boomed, American society pushed the boundaries of freedom, morality, and artistic expression. This program highlights the most famous fads and foibles of this colorful era, from dance marathons to bathtub gin. We’ll also look at some of the defining personalities of the 1920s – among them, Al Capone and Charles Lindbergh; Babe Ruth and Mickey Mouse; and finally, the hapless Herbert Hoover, presiding over the stock market crash that ended the party in 1929.

A native of Williamsport, PA, John Maietta retired from a lifelong public relations career in 2010. For many years he operated a successful freelance business in the Harrisburg area, while simultaneously serving as a public affairs officer with the Pennsylvania National Guard. Starting in 2002, he completed numerous active-duty assignments with the U.S. Army, including long-term deployments to Bosnia, Kosovo, Germany, and Iraq. In 2014 he received a master’s degree in applied history from Shippensburg University. He later taught introductory courses in world history at Shippensburg University and York College of Pennsylvania. His popular presentations on history and culture have been featured at many libraries, retirement centers, and other venues throughout the region.
