2021 Summer Reading Challenge for Everyone!

Read along with the Library during the 2021 Tails & Tales Summer Reading Challenge
Programs are available for all ages: children, teens, and adults
Read or be read to: no one is too young to participate!

Get Started

To get started, register online using our reading tracking software, Beanstack, at If you've participated in summer reading in the past, you likely have an existing Beanstack account. Log in and update your readers' information. New to summer at the Library? Create an account - only one is needed - and register each reader in your family. If you need assistance with Beanstack, please call the children's desk at 717-774-7822.

You can also download the Beanstack Tracker app (available for iOS and Android; search "Beanstack Tracker") and sign into your Beanstack account for easy tracking on your phone.

We also have an optional paper log you can print or pick up from the children's room for young children who want to keep track visually. Please remember that you must register on Beanstack and update your online log to be eligible for prize drawings and complete activities: come see us at the children's desk if you need assistance.

Join us for Our Summer Reading Kick-Off Event

Free outdoor movies are back this summer in New Cumberland! We’ve teamed up with Build a Better New Cumberland and the Borough of New Cumberland to host the first outdoor movie of the summer on the beautiful Library grounds.  Come kick off our summer reading program and relax & enjoy the film! Arrive as early at 7:30pm to claim your spot on the grass, get signed up for our summer challenge, and take part in some kid-friendly activities, like our sidewalk obstacle course. The movie will start as soon as it's dark enough, usually around 8:45pm. Rain date is Saturday, June 12.

More Fun Events & Activities

Each week of summer the Library will offer a mix of in-person, at-home, and virtual events. Space at in-person events is limited and will require registration. We may add more events over the summer as conditions improve. Please continue to check our website events listings for udpates!

Children's Challenge Prizes and Incentives

Participants ages 0-12 who register for the children's summer reading challenge by June 7 will automatically be entered in a drawing to win four Hersheypark tickets good for general admission!

The first 100 families who register and visit the Library starting June 7 will receive a special 2021 window cling.

Look for chances to earn small incentives for participating in programs like our sidewalk chalk obstacle course and backyard nature scavenger hunt.

Every week you earn points in Beanstack you'll be entered for a chance to win a weekly prize. For every 50 points, you'll earn a ticket that you can enter to win the grand prize of your choice! Choose between a skateboard, a mega Lego set, a mega Duplo set, Magnatiles, or a giftcard!

Every reader who completes the reading challenge wins a free prize book of their choice from more than 20 available titles. Happy Reading!
