The Grandon StoryWalk®
The Fredricksen Library is happy to announce that a permanent StoryWalk® has been opened at the Creekview Park North in Hampden Township. This project was made possible from the generous support of long-time donors, James and Jean Grandon. The aptly named Grandon StoryWalk®, combines literacy with physical activity, and is an innovative way to get people of all ages outside to read while getting a little exercise.
The dedication ceremony, held on July 20, 2020, was attended by members of the Hampden Township Board of Commissioners, and Fredricksen Library Trustees and staff. The dedication centered on the generosity of Jim and Jean Grandon, and how they consistently support the Fredricksen Library’s mission to transform the lives of the community it serves.
Over a decade ago, the first StoryWalk® was created in Vermont. Now, we bring this exciting blend of literacy and the outdoors to the Fredricksen Library community!
Emily McQuiggan, former Teen & STEM Outreach Coordinator, who first brought the concept of Storywalk® to the Fredricksen Library, said “The Grandon Storywalk® is a great addition to our community! It brings two of Fredricksen’s favorite things together – reading and the outdoors. Families can walk along the path an enjoy a picture book, accompanied by some fun instructions and literacy tips.”
The Grandon StoryWalk® will be updated seasonally with a new book title for the community to enjoy. Members of the community are welcome and encouraged to visit the Grandon Storywalk® at Creekview Park North, located at 4630 Creekview Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050
What is a StoryWalk®? (From https://www.kellogghubbard.org/storywalk)
StoryWalk® is an innovative and delightful way for children — and adults! — to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children's book are attached to wooden stakes, which are installed along an outdoor path. As you stroll down the trail, you're directed to the next page in the story.
StoryWalks® have been installed in 50 states and 12 countries including, Germany, Canada, England, Bermuda, Russia, Malaysia, Pakistan and South Korea! They are always received with appreciation.
StoryWalk® was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and has developed with the help of Rachel Senechal, Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
