A Short History of Folk Music in the U.S.

folk music7 pm Community Room
Join us for this two part series:
Part 1 (January 29 at 7 pm) will cover the years 1840-1940 - field songs, dance songs, songs about freedom and the railroad, protest, union, Dustbowl songs and more.
Part 2 (February 12 at 7 pm) begins with Woody Guthrie and includes Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, Malvina Reynolds, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Richie Havens, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Waits and others. We will share music that taps into escape, understanding, and transformation and we will talk about what Seeger called “the folk process.”

In both parts of the series, audience participation will be encouraged – singing, insights, dialogue, etc. Dr. Doug Morris teaches in the world of critical pedagogy at West Chester University. He is a jazz guitarist, singer, composer and performer of “people’s songs” and has written about those in the tradition of “people’s music.”
