The Friends of Fredricksen holds an annual silent auction to help fund the library's needs and wants. More than 150 local businesses donate gifts and services which are auctioned off in November of each year. Funds from this auction and our two book sales are used to: fund children's, teens, and adult programming, community programs, library equipment like new book trucks, the building fund to repair the gutters and support funding of the new lower level entrance, staff and volunteer appreciation, and prizes for the new patron campaign each year. Funds we raise are requested by department heads to supplement funds in the operating budget and keep our doors open. Items include a complete orthodontic package valued at $6,500 to $3 and $5 fast food coupons and everything in between like art, jewelry, services like dry cleaning, car washes, food store cards, restaurant cards, sporting events and gift certificates to the West Shore Farmers Market.

The Friends of Fredricksen Library serve three functions:

to advocate for library funding with local legislators; to raise funds to help meet the costs of special programming and new equipment; and to volunteer time at the library.

Special thanks to all the businesses and individuals who donated items and services to the 2017 Silent Auction. Proceeds from last year’s book sales and Silent Auction have been dispersed this year to fund Children’s, Teen, and Adult Programing, a popcorn machine, new book carts, Staff and Volunteer recognition, a new refrigerator and stack cutting machine, Book Pages (a monthly adult book reviewing paper), and two new chip enabled devices as well as a donation to the Building Fund to help with funding the new lower level entrance.

Book Sales - Stay tuned for details about our Spring Sale!  Don't forget we take donations at any time at the Reference Desk.

The profits from the semi-annual sales have been used for:

  • The self-check unit in the Pollock Children’s Library
  • Shelving units and other equipment requested by the Library staff
  • Programs in the Pollock Children’s Library
  • Teen events at Fredricksen
  • Meeting our building fund pledge

book saleWhen you leave your donations at the reference desk, the first step is a quick review by the staff to see if your item might meet a need in the circulating collection or be appropriate for the ongoing book sale. The majority of the books are then sorted by teams of volunteers from the Friends. Once the materials have been sorted, they are packed and stored until the week of the sale.

During the week of the sale, an army of volunteers is needed to erect tables, move books from storage on to the tables, arrange the books so that our shoppers can find the perfect item, and then staff the sale. Finally, when the sale is over, all remaining items are packed for distribution to others who can make use of them:

  • East Pennsboro Friends for their sale
  • Charitable organizations working with children and adults
  • Veterans
  • Overseas missions
  • Day care centers
  • Other libraries

The golden rule when considering a donation is “Would I give this to a Friend?”

The donations appreciated are:

  • Children’s or teen books
  • hard cover fiction or non-fiction
  • dictionaries or thesauruses
  • media in working condition, such as, DVD, music cd, books on cd, video games
  • mass market paperbacks (in “like new” condition copyright 1980 or newer)
  • trade (large) paperbacks
  • textbooks (copyright within 10 years)
  • travel books (copyright within 5 years)
  • large print books.

Please re-evaluate your donations if they:

  • are moldy, dirty or water-damaged
  • have damaged or missing pages
  • have excessive highlighting or markings

Materials that would be better donated to another charity of your choice:

  • academic journals
  • activity books
  • advanced readers copy
  • directories

  • encyclopedias
  • Magazines
  • LP records
  • VHS tapes
