WHY DONATE?
Bosler Memorial Library, located in downtown Carlisle, is a public library serving the Borough of Carlisle and seven townships in Cumberland County. Founded in 1900, Bosler Library's mission is to meet the community's evolving informational, educational, entertainment and cultural needs. In carrying out this mission, Bosler Library offers free access to resources and educational opportunities for Cumberland County residents of all ages, income levels and ethnic backgrounds, from early literacy programs for preschoolers to access to high-speed Internet for adults and free book delivery for homebound seniors.
While Bosler Memorial Library receives some tax support, private contributions are needed and greatly appreciated to cover more than 22% of the annual cost for the growing demand from the public for programs and services. Because Bosler Memorial Library is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, your donations are tax deductible under the full extent of the law.
To learn about different ways you can make an impact with your gift to Bosler Memorial Library, refer to our Opportunities in Giving brochure.
Please be aware that the Bosler Memorial Library and the Friends of Bosler are separate 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and as such are required by law to maintain separate accounting records. When making a donation, we ask that you do not combine your donations for the two organizations.
GIFTS OF STOCK
If you have some highly appreciated securities – some that may be worth many times what you paid for them initially – this is a perfect asset to use for making a donation because you can still harvest some of that gain without paying the significant capital-gains tax. Simply make a gift of the stock to Bosler Memorial Library, avoiding the capital-gain tax. Then you can use the cash you had planned to give to the Library to repurchase the stock – which provides you a new cost basis at the current fair-market value.
For more information and to access the transfer instructions, contact Molly Shane, CFRE, Development Officer, at (717) 243-4642, ext 3222 or mshane@cumberlandcountylibraries.org.
DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS
Bosler Memorial Library is also happy to accept gifts from donor-advised funds and private foundations. If you have a donor-advised fund, consider making your annual gift to Bosler this way rather than from your checking account.
GIVING THROUGH YOUR IRA
If you are age 70½ or older, giving a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA is a great way to make a donation. It lowers your tax burden, even if you claim the standard deduction because it’s no longer taxable income if you roll it over directly to a charity like Bosler Memorial Library.
For the 2023 tax year, IRA owners and certain participants in qualified retirement plans are required to take distributions beginning at the age of 73. The minimum age for making a tax-free transfer from an IRA to a charity remains at 70½, and the annual limit for such transfers remains at $100,000.
Click here for more information on eligibility criteria and how to make a gift through your IRA. You can also contact Molly Shane, CFRE, Development Officer, at (717) 243-4642, ext. 3222 or your financial advisor.
