Children's Events at Fredricksen
Mission Transition: Preparing for Kindergarten
One Monday a month at 6:30 pm – Sept. through May (except Dec.)
Help your little one prepare for a lifetime of learning by participating in this innovative program developed by our own Pollock children’s library staff. Children from Schaeffer, West Creek Hills, East Pennsboro, Shaull, Hampden, Sporting Hill, Washington Heights, Lower Allen and Highland Elementaries are welcome. Future students entering kindergarten in 2011 will do Kindergarten readiness activities, hear stories, have parachute fun, and work with colors, alphabet, sorting, and rhyming words. Kids may meet other future students and make early friendships! Sessions will be on Mon., but moved to Wed. on holiday weeks. Registration starts August 9, with the first session starting Sept. 8.
Fall Story times
6-week sessions
week of Sept. 20 through week of Oct. 25
Join us at these age appropriate programs that promote literacy and provide a fun first experience at the library. These story times will help increase children’s vocabulary, comprehension and ability to interact socially. Sessions are as follows:
Just Baby & Me – Ages 0-2 with an adult, rhymes, songs and board books
Mondays at 9:30 am, Thursdays at 10:15 and 11 am, Fridays at 9:30 am
Twos – Songs, rhymes and easy books for children age two with an adult.
Mondays at 10:15 and 11 am, Wednesdays at 9:30 and 10:30 am
Threes – Stories, songs and fingerplays for three year olds with an adult.
Tuesdays at 9:30 and 10:30 am, Thursdays at 9:30 am, Fridays at 10:30 am
Picture Book Time – Children old enough to sit by themselves for 30-45 minutes will listen to age appropriate stories, songs, and fingerplays.
Mondays at 1:15 pm, Tuesdays at 7 pm
Registration is required and begins Sept. 8 for Just Baby & Me, Sept. 9 for Twos, Threes and Picture Book Time.
Chess Night
Friday, September 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
Improve your skills by playing with other young chess enthusiasts. Members of the Harrisburg Area Chess Club will be on hand to instruct and guide. Ages 7-13. Bring a chess set if you have one. No registration necessary.
Drop-In Story Time
Thursday, September 9 at 7 pm
Thursday, September 23 at 7 pm
Drop-in story time with stories, flannel boards, songs and fingerplays provides a fun experience at the library. For ages 3 years and up with no registration necessary.
Teddy Bear Story Time!
Friday, September 10 at 10 am
3 to 5 year olds are invited with a caregiver to bring their favorite teddy bear for stories, rhymes and songs, do a craft and enjoy a teddy bear snack! Registration required starting Aug. 26. with a $1 fee per child.
Music Together with Kathy Eckhaus
Monday, September 13 at 10 am & 10:45 am
Kathy Eckhaus will present an introduction to her program of movement activities set to songs. For preschoolers and a caregiver with registration starting August 30.
Y oga for Children of all Ages!
Wednesday, September 15 at 9:30, 10:15 & 11 am
Om Baby Pregnancy & Parenting Center will give a demonstration on their specially designed classes for children and caregivers, in 3 different age groups:
Om Baby Yoga – for babies up to walking with caregiver at 9:30 am
Toddler Time Yoga – for mobile children up to 2 years old with caregiver at 10:15 am
Om Child Yoga – for children 2 to 4 years old with caregiver at 11 am
Registration required starting September 1.
READ to Dogs
Thursday, September 16 from 6:30 to 7:45 pm
Specially trained dogs will be at the library to listen to children read aloud. This program is helpful to children who may be shy or reluctant to read aloud. For readers to age 12 with registration starting Sept. 1. Sponsored by Mary Kelliher, Realtor, Prudential Thompson Wood Real Estate
Family Movie Night
Friday, September 17 at 6:30 pm
We will be showing a G or PG -rated film with free popcorn, call the library the week before for movie title. All ages welcome and all children must be accompanied by an adult. No registration necessary.
Kindermusik Demo Class
Monday, September 20 at 9:30 & 10:30 am
Tiffany Harman will be on hand to give a demonstration of the lively Kindermusik program. Under 3 years - 9:30 am, 3 to 5 year olds - 10:30 am. Registration required beginning Sept. 1.
Fall American Girl Doll Book Club
Wednesdays, Sept. 22, Oct. 20 & Nov. 10 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm
The American Girl Doll Book Club will meet and discuss a different doll and her book each month. Sept. – Lanie by Jane Kurtz, Oct. – Felicity by Valerie Tripp and Nov. – Josefina by Valerie Tripp. Please read the book prior to attending; dolls are welcome but not required. Snack and Craft included. Register once for all three sessions starting Sept. 1, for grades 1 – 4. Sponsored by Crumay Parnes Associates, Inc.
Super Reader – Floyd Stokes!
Thursday, September 30 at 6:30 pm
The Super Reader visits Fredricksen Library to read his favorites to children in preschool and elementary school. No registration necessary.
