The Bee Local Festival returned to Fredricksen Library on Saturday, September 15, 2012 with a celebration of local food & farms, honey & beekeeping, and wellness & outdoor recreation. Over 1,200 visitors enjoyed the onsite farmers' market, children's activities, informational booths, and beekeeping and gardening demonstrations. A new feature, Bee Well at Bee Local, sponsored by Highmark, provided free health screenings, engaging cooking demonstrations, Yoga on the Lawn and Zumba on the Lawn, information on various recreational groups in the area, and a Guide to Wellness Collections at the Library. The day was capped by a Concert on the Lawn featuring Bucky's Brother. Early the next morning, members of the Harrisburg Area Road Runners Club met at the Library to run a special "Bee Local" Sunday Run. See Run results

This easy Hatha yoga class is suitable for beginners, and even students with a regular practice will benefit by reconnecting to the basics. We'll begin with some simple breathing exercises, learn the basics of connecting the breath with movement through simple warm-ups, move on to some foundational yoga postures, and finally conclude with a soothing guided relaxation.

Bucky's Brother Concert

Bucky's Brother is an acoustic group comprised of seasoned musicians from southern PA and Maryland. Instrumentation includes guitar, mandolin, fiddle, accordion, flute and recorder. Bucky's Brother is renowned for their tight, three-part harmonies; inventive covers of songs in the Americana, alt-county, and folk-rock genres, and award-winning originals. Bucky's Brother features members Kristina Machusick on lead vocals, flute and recorder; Dave Streett on mandolin, fiddle, guitar and vocals; Fred Ritz on accordion and percussion and Michael Arthur on guitar and vocals.

Join the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau's Friends of Ag Foundation in their Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab for a hands-on lesson on healthy nutrition. This 32-foot trailer, complete with air conditioning, provides work stations for students to conduct hands-on experiments that meet science curriculum standards and are just plain fun! (Check out an article on the Lab in the
Times Herald). Each session will last approximately 30 minutes and parents must accompany children under the age of 8. This is a free activity, but space is limited, so please sign up for a time slot!

Join Jeremy Barnes, an educator by profession and beekeeper by passion, past President of the
York County Beekeepers Association and a frequent contributor to various beekeeping journals for a fascinating look at the world of the honeybee. By observing close-up the opening of an active hive contained in a screened canopy, you'll get a close look at the marvels and wonder of the inner workings of a bee hive, a demonstration as to the gentility of honey bees, and a chance to ask questions which can be answered with visible examples from the hive.

Cumberland County Master Gardeners for this simple demonstration on composting with earthworms. Yard trimmings and food residuals together constitute 27 percent of the US municipal solid waste stream. That’s a lot of waste to send to landfills when it could become useful and environmentally beneficial compost instead! Learn this easy method for turning kitchen scraps, yard wastes and paper products into humus. Humus, or compost, is a dark, soil-like substance that enriches soil with nutrients, increases moisture retention, improves structure and provides a good environment for beneficial soil organisms.

Steve has worked at Cafe on Market, 2201 in the Borough, with JDK Catering, and currently owns and operates Mountainside Supper Club, which focuses on the sustainable farm-to-fork cooking movement.

Capital Area Girls on the Run - GOTR inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Girls on the Run® is a 501(c)3 positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. The core curriculum addresses many aspects of girls’ development – their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. Lessons provide girls with the tools to make positive decisions and to avoid risky adolescent behaviors. The program is provided for girls in grades 3rd-5th (Girls on the Run) and 6th-8th (Girls on Track). Pennsylvania Parks & Forest Foundation - Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF) began in
1999 as a statewide nonprofit organization to provide a voice for the Commonwealth’s 120 state parks and 2.2 million acres of forest land.
