You! Everyone, from infants to fifth grade, is invited and encouraged to READ or BE READ TO this summer. Register for the Summer Learning Program online, at the library, or at the Summer Learning Program Kickoff on June 3. Registration is required.
Read anything you like! Then, choose a reasonable, attainable weekly reading goal. Whether your child reads alone or is read to, we encourage you and your child to keep those books open all summer and to keep track of their reading progress. Record that reading progress by writing the number of minutes read or listened to on your calendar. To receive your weekly prizes, bring the calendar to the Children's desk at the Joseph T. Please Note: The deadline for turning in your calendar to receive an award at the Awards Program is Saturday, August 5, 2017. The Awards Program with Mayor Ritter will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at 10:30 am in the Children’s Area of the library. The deadline for turning in your calendar to receive your prizes (excluding the award) is Thursday, August 31, 2017.
Read at home, on vacation, at the library, anywhere! The library offers weekly children’s programs (Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, Story Time, Family Story Time) for all ages on various weekdays. There are also special events (registration required) on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Tuesday’s special events are most appropriate for preschool age children and Wednesday’s special events are most appropriate for grade-school age children.

Our Summer Learning Kickoff is Saturday, June 3. Sign up and join us at the library from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm on June 3, for hot dogs, popcorn, beverages, crafts, and activities to celebrate reading and to kick off the Summer Learning Program. Begin to record your reading on Monday, June 5, and continue to do so until Friday, July 28. Calendars must be turned in no later than Friday, August 4, to receive a Certificate of Achievement and prizes. The Mayor’s Awards Program will be held on Saturday, August 12, at 10:30 am at Simpson Public Library. Join us for crafts, activities, and ice cream; and receive your Certificate of Achievement from Mayor Ritter himself! ALL calendars must be turned in no later than Thursday, August 31, to receive prizes.
Young children who are not readers yet will reap the benefits of increasing their vocabulary, discovering the significance of the printed words, and obtaining a love of books from listening to parents read stories to them. Research has shown that school children who spend part of their summer reading are more likely to maintain their reading skills when they return to school in the fall.
Join us for Book Buddies, a special Story Time each Thursday afternoon of the eight Summer Reading weeks at 1:30 pm. Several young adults plan and present these Story Times which are full of stories and crafts for children of all ages!
