Fredricksen Reads:
One Book, One Community's 2012 pick!
Zeitoun by Dave Eggers
Thursday, October 18 at 7 pm
Become a part of Fredricksen Reads, our series of book discussions, as we discuss this year's One Book, One Community book choice - Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. This National Bestseller documents the story of a long-time New Orleans resident who chose to stay behind during Hurricane Katrina while the rest of his family evacuated, describing how he spent days after the storm traveling by canoe to feed abandoned animals before he was inexplicably arrested. REGISTER ONLINE

Two films celebrating the One Book, One Community choice:
Indie Film Fridays: Mine - Friday, October 12 at 7 pm
We celebrate this year's One Book, One Community choice with MINE, a documentary about the essential bond between humans and animals, set against the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina. This gripping, character-driven story follows New Orleans residents as they attempt the daunting task of trying to reunite with their pets who have been adopted by families all over the country, and chronicles the custody battles that arise when two families love the same pet. Not recommended for ages under 17 without parental permission. No registration necessary.

Trouble the Water - Friday, October 26 at 7 pm
This Oscar-nominated documentary follows aspiring rap artist Kimberly Roberts and her husband Scott who, with no means of evacuation, documented their struggle to survive the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans' Ninth Ward and its bureaucratic nightmare aftermath. This film is not rated. Not recommended for ages under 17 without parental permission. No registration necessary.

Farmers on Walnut Grows in Camp Hill
Following Bee Local @ Fredricksen Library in September 2011, the Library, farmers, and Camp Hill Borough participated in the planning and start-up of a seasonal, open air, producer-only farmers' market to provide residents of our service area with a resource for fresh, nutritious, locally grown and raised produced, meat, dairy, bread and other farm goods. The market opened to great success for the season on Thursday, May 24, 2012 to a wonderful crowd of local shoppers, and will operate every Thursday from 3-7PM through November 15, 2012. Fredricksen Library maintains a nonprofit booth at the market the first Thursday of each month, where we have exhibited and provided information to an average of 520 visitors about the library and its programs, hosted a Celtic Band (Seasons), and promoted and registered participants for our Library Loop 5K. Look for these upcoming programs at the Library's booth at Farmers on Walnut in October and November:

2nd Annual Bee Local @ Fredricksen -
Thank you to 1200+ attendees!
The Bee Local Festival returned to Fredricksen Library on Saturday, September 15, 2012 with a celebration of local food & farms, honey & beekeeping, and wellness & outdoor recreation. Over 1,200 visitors enjoyed the onsite farmers' market, children's activities, informational booths, and beekeeping and gardening demonstrations. A new feature, Bee Well at Bee Local, sponsored by Highmark, provided free health screenings, engaging cooking demonstrations, Yoga on the Lawn and Zumba on the Lawn, information on various recreational groups in the area, and a Guide to Wellness Collections at the Library. The day was capped by a Concert on the Lawn featuring Bucky's Brother. Early the next morning, members of the Harrisburg Area Road Runners Club met at the Library to run a special "Bee Local" Sunday Run. The Library would like to give special thanks to our sponsors and partners, including Farmers on Walnut, Channels Food Rescue, Highland Gardens, Highmark, the Family of Ashley Dietrich, and Holy Spirit Hospital.
