Join the Shippensburg team as our Youth Services Assistant (Part-Time)


SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Youth Services Assistant provides general library services for and promotes literacy among young library users.  He/she performs varied duties in the youth services department under the direction of the Director of Youth Services.


  • Bachelor's Degree or combination of education, training, and/or life experience

  • Training and/or experience in early childhood education

  • Ability to read, capture, and hold the attention of young children

  • Experience working in a public library is preferred

  • Position requires a valid PA drivers license

Knowledge of:

  • Library practices, procedures, and techniques

  • Youth literature and activities

  • Use of computers and library equipment


  • Direct crafts and other activities

  • Supervise volunteers

  • Establish good rapport with children including when helping them select library materials to meet their needs

  • Work positively and effectively within a team model

  • Communicate clearly and professionally

  • Be adaptable and able to make decisions independently


Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan, promote, and conduct your programs and services as needed

  • Maintain program records and assist with reports as needed

  • Use computer software to enter data, maintain contact lists, and create documents

  • Attend staff meetings

  • Perform other duties as assigned


Physical requirements include ability to move around the facility, walk, sit, bend, climb, kneel, stoop, and carry; use hand and finger motion with enough manual dexterity to use computers and handle library items; lift a minimum of 25 pounds, and perform other efforts, such as pushing a loaded book cart, as identified with typical library work.  Duties are performed in surroundings where undesirable physical conditions and hazards are minor and controllable.
