Women in Archaeology

Join us on Monday, August 19, at 7:00 pm for a special program on Women in Archaeology - part of our Summer Reading Program series.

Ira Beckerman will give us a historic perspective of archaeology by explaining what archaeologists do, what the state of archaeology was in 1880-1900 with a short bio of Petrie and his contributions, a review of some of the pioneering women archaeologists before WWII, and a wrap up of the state of women in archaeology today starting with a 2005 demographic survey of the Society of American Archaeology membership.

Ira Beckerman has been the Cultural Resources Unit Head for the Bureau of Project Delivery at PennDOT since 1998.  He has worked as a field archaeologist in Mexico, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Society for American Archaeology, and a former member of the Transportation Research Board’s Archaeology and Historic Preservation Committee.

Dr. Beckerman was a 2001 recipient of the PennDOT Star of Excellence, the 2012 Preservation Pennsylvania Visionary Award, and lives at home in New Cumberland with his wife, Linda.
