Join us on April 26 for the Grand Opening of the Simpson Seed Library!
We lend books, DVDs, CDs, and now...seeds! Simpson Library is excited to become one of a few libraries across the United States to have a Seed Library. We are excited to create a unique and meaningful addition to Mechanicsburg’s community resources. Repurposing old technology, we have acquired a card catalog located on the main level that will serve as the home of the seed library. The drawers will be divided by three categories: vegetables, herbs, and ornamentals. Drawers will also be marked by how difficult it is to save the seeds. The Seed Library’s starting seeds were purchased and graciously donated by the Cumberland County Commission for Women.
The idea behind the seed library is that patrons borrow seeds, let some of their crop go to seed, and then return some of the next generation of seeds to the library for others to borrow. Don’t worry, there are no late fees! Check out and returning procedures are located at the seed library. If you are new to seed saving and have trouble harvesting the seeds, feel free to bring in a seed package that you purchased for donation. The organizations behind the seed lending library ask that donations of this type are both organic and heirloom. Please do not donate invasive species or hybrids. Regular donations of seeds of this type are also welcomed and appreciated. The library will also provide adult programming related to gardening and seed saving throughout the spring and summer, giving interested patrons a chance to learn more.
The launch date of the Simpson Seed Library is April 26th – also the date of the Mechanicsburg Earth Day Festival.
