The Joseph T. Simpson Public Library is governed by a 12-member board of trustees. Board members serve as community volunteers, overseeing the library's budget, strategic direction and overall service delivery. Each board member serves a three year term and is elected by the Board of Trustees.

2016 Meeting Dates
The Board of Trustees meet monthly, the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm. No meetings in July and December. The November meeting is held on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm. All meetings are open to the public and held in the library's tutoring room on the Upper Level.
Board Member Profiles
Sue Erdman, Library Director. In 1996, Sue was hired as Library Director by the Board of Trustees. Previous to her current position, Sue served as Assistant Director of the Bosler Memorial Library in Carlisle. Sue’s credentials include a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Shippensburg University. Since 1997, Sue has been an active member of the Mechanicsburg North Rotary Club. In addition, she has served on various local boards in leadership positions including the Mechanicsburg Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Mechanicsburg Partnership, and Mechanicsburg North Rotary Club. Sue resides in Monroe Township with her husband Bob.
Karen Cochran, Board President (1/17). Karen joined the Board of Trustees in 2011 and is now in her second term of office. Professionally, Karen retired as Librarian at Boiling Springs High School, South Middleton School District. Her credentials include a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Shippensburg University. She is the current President of the Upper Allen Women’s Club – GFWC, Treasurer of the Pennsylvania Citizens for Better Libraries Board of Directors, a member of the Pennsylvania Library Association, Past President of Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library, Past President of the Upper Allen Women’s Club Foundation, and Past Chair of the Fund Raising Committee of the Upper Allen Women’s Club – GFWC. Karen resides in Upper Allen Township with her husband Jim. They are parents of two children and proud grandparents of six grandchildren.
Russell Huff, Board Vice President (1/19). Russ joined the Board of Trustees in 2013 and is now in his second term of office. Professionally, after 25 years, Russ retired as Sales Manager from IBM. His credentials include a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Shippensburg University and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Rutgers University. Russ is a former School Director of the Mechanicsburg Area School District. Russ resides in Upper Allen Township with his wife Julie. They are parents of three children and proud grandparents of one granddaughter.
Carol Pennington, Board Secretary (1/18). Carol joined the Board of Trustees in 2012 and is now in her second term of office. Professionally, Carol is a retired attorney from the PA Public Utility Commission. Her credentials include a BS from Penn State University and a JD from Dickinson School of Law. She is active in the American Association of University Women, Harrisburg Branch, and Past Co-President, Nominating Committee Chair, and Yearbook Chair. Carol serves as an Advisory Board Member for the Adult Community Autism Program, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Keystone Autism Services. Carol volunteers for Theatre Harrisburg, serves as Secretary of the Bethany Village Auxiliary, is Vice President of the Harrisburg Study Club, and serves as Secretary of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Council. Carol resides in Lower Allen Township. She is the mother of two sons.
Annie Miller, Board Treasurer (1/18). Annie joined the Board of Trustees in 2012 and is now in her second term of office. Professionally, Annie is employed as a teacher with the Capital Area Intermediate Unit. Annie has also worked as a substitute teacher in the Mechanicsburg Area School District, and as a Guest teacher at the Cumberland Perry Area Vocational Technical School. She is Co-Chair of Kiva Carlisle a Girls’ Investment Group. Annie also volunteers as a Youth Group Leader at St. John’s Church in Carlisle. Annie’s credentials include a MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. For the past 25 years, she has worked with non-profits and in education. Annie resides in Mechanicsburg with her husband Michael and their daughters.
Ruth Karns Rudderow (1/19). Ruth joined the Board of Trustees in 2016 and is now in her first term of office. Professionally, Ruth is the Executive Vice President of Special Projects/Owner, Karns Quality Foods, Ltd. Ruth holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Penn State University. She volunteers at the American Red Cross, Junior Achievement, Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, and as a Pet Loss Bereavement Counselor. Ruth lives in Silver Spring Township with her husband Bruce. They are parents of two sons and proud grandparents of one grandchild.
Patricia Sanker (1/19). Patty joined the Board of Trustees in 2016 and is now in her first term of office. Professionally, Patty retired from the South Middleton School District after serving15 years as Superintendent of Schools and a total of 38 years as a teacher and administrator in PA public schools. Her credentials include a BS Degree from Indiana University of PA, a M.Ed. from Shippensburg University, and an Ed.D. from the Pennsylvania State University. Patty is a member of the PA Association of School Administrators (PASA), PA Association of School Retirees (PASR), Penn State Alumni Association, and the Upper Allen Township Woman’s Club – GFWC. She resides in Upper Allen Township. Patty is the mother of one son and proud grandparent of two grandchildren.
James Van Kirk (1/18). Jim joined the Board of Trustees in 2015 and is now in his first term of office. Professionally, Jim retired as Budget Analyst at the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts. His 40 years as a business administrator included 10 years in banking, 12 years as a school business administrator, 6 years as a collections enforcement officer and financial officer and 12 years as a budget analysist. Jim’s credentials include a BA Degree in Business Administration from Grove City College. He resides in Mechanicsburg with his wife Pam. They are parents of one daughter and proud grandparents of one granddaughter.
Marcey Whiteside (1/17). Marcey joined the Board of Trustees in 2008 and is now in her third term of office. Professionally, she is a retired school administrator from the Mechanicsburg Area School District. Marcey retired after 30 years of work in public schools and 5 years in the private sector. Her credentials include a BA in Elementary Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a MS in Curriculum Administration from Campbell University, North Carolina. In addition, Marcey earned her Administrative Certificate from Shippensburg University. Marcey is a member of the Mechanicsburg North Rotary Club, Publicity Chair for the Protestant Women of the Chapel at the Carlisle Barracks, Scholarship and Publicity Chair for Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) and PEO State Financial Committee, American Red Cross volunteer, and Junior Achievement volunteer. Marcey resides in Silver Spring Township with her husband Dan. They are parents of two children and proud grandparents of three grandchildren.
Jonathan Williams (1/17). Jonathan joined the Board of Trustees in 2014 and is now in his first term of office. Professionally, he is employed as Vice President and Investment Advisor at PNC Bank. His credentials include a BA in English from Dickinson College. Jonathan has worked for the past 24 years in the Financial Industry and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). He serves on the Investment Advisory Committee, TFEC, and The Foundation for Enhancing Communities; and is on the Central PA Board of Directors of the Estate Planning Council. Jonathan resides in Upper Allen Township with his wife Jackie and three daughters.
Earnie Zimmerman (1/18). Earnie joined the Board of Trustees in 2012 and is in his second term of office. Professionally, he is the owner of Zimmerman Plumbing and Heating in Mechanicsburg. Earnie has been in business for 36 years. In addition to serving on the Simpson Library Board, he is a member of the Cumberland Perry Vocational Technical School Advisory Board, the York Technical Institute School Advisory Board, the COG Building Code Appeals Committee, and the Mechanicsburg Area Foundation Advisory Committee. Earnie resides in Carroll Township with his wife Kelly Bailey. He is the father of two daughters and three bonus children. They are proud grandparents of five grandchildren.
Marilyn Zywiec (1/19). Marilyn joined the Board of Trustee in 2016 and is in her first term of office. Professionally, she is co-owner of Computer Information Systems, Inc., a company founded in 1985. Marilyn’s credentials include a BS degree in Applied Mathematics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition to serving on the Simpson Library Board, Marilyn serves on the West Shore Chamber Governmental Affairs Committee, she is Treasurer for Hope United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg, and belongs to the Effective Communicators Club of Toastmasters International. Marilyn resides in Silver Spring Township with her husband Wayne. They are parents of two children.
