WELCOME TO THE 2016 READING CHALLENGE!

Between now and the end of 2016, select 12 books to read. Your choices should each fulfill one of the following categories:

1. An electronic book

2. A nonfiction book

3. A book with an animal as the main character

4. A book you read with a friend

5. A book published in 2016

6. A book that is a mystery

7. A book that is historical fiction

8. A book that is science fiction or fantasy

9. A book that is steampunk or horror

10. A book recommended by a teacher

11. A graphic novel or graphic nonfiction

12. A favorite book you want to reread

13. A book whose cover you like

14. A funny book

15. A book that was a favorite of one of your parents when he/she was a child

16. A book that is part of a series

17. A book that was made into a movie

Select your books to fulfill the categories you choose. Books used for the challenge should be age appropriate. Each title can only fill one category. In order to fulfill the challenge, you will be reading 12 books before the end of December.

If you’d like to join us for one of our book clubs, you can use that title toward this challenge as well.

Record the book on your form and rate it on a 1-10 scale. (10 = EXCELLENT!, 1 = yuck)

We will read a book called Mud Puddle by Robert Munsch and enjoy a special dessert.  Please bring lunch for your child.  Dessert and juice will be provided.  Children ages 3 – 6 can register beginning April 18 with a $1 fee.

Help your little one prepare for a lifetime of learning by participating in this innovative program developed by our own Pollock Children’s Library staff.  

Children entering kindergarten in Fall 2016 will do kindergarten readiness activities, hear stories, have parachute fun, and work with colors, numbers, letters, sorting, rhyming and science. Kids may meet other future students and make early friendships! 

Children attending Hoover Elementary in Camp Hill School District will meet the first Monday of the month. Sessions will be moved to Wednesday on holiday weeks. Registration starts Aug. 3 with the first session starting Aug. 31. Sponsored by: M&T Bank, Centric Bank and Davis Vision Inc.

A time for children and adults to have uninterrupted play time.  Children have the opportunity to play with toys in several developmental areas such as fine and gross motor, dramatic play, blocks, books, music and more! It’s also a time for parents to meet and socialize. We will not have an art experience or resource person like in Family Play Workshop. Children ages 1 to 31/2 and siblings birth to 5 are welcome. Volunteers from the Harrisburg/West Shore Chess Club will be on hand to assist young chess players and match up competitors with equal skill level. Ages 7-13. Participants are asked to bring a chess set if possible but not required. No registration required.

Join Sovia Therapy at this Story Time and Music Class designed for all children, including those who may have challenges with traditional story times and/or have developmental delays.  Sensory play, read aloud stories, music and ASL interpretation will all be a part of the program, which will take place in a no ‘shush’ zone. Led by certified Music and Developmental Therapists, this full sensory experience is for children of all ages and developmental levels. Registration begins April 23; adult must accompany child for session.

Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Block Play Parties for young children (3-6 years) and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  Blocks offer children an almost infinite variety of opportunities to express themselves, from constructing simple designs to veritable engineering feats of bridge building. Come join us for a morning of fun and creativity with blocks! Registration is required and limited to 10 children.  One hour Block Parties will be held on Wednesdays, March 16th, April 6th and May 18th from 9:30-10:30 AM.  Registration is required and limited to 10 children.  Registration begins March 2, March 23 and May 4. Sponsored by The Office of Commonwealth Libraries as part of Cruise into Kindergarten, M&T Bank, Centric Bank and Davis Vision Inc.

Springtime means the return of bright & beautiful COLORS!  Our crafting adventure for May will be exploring and mixing colors (in 3 dimensions). Prepare to have FUN (and maybe get a bit messy).

Adventure Crafts is a reading, craft, and activity program for children in grades 1-3 and their adult partners. Each session will be centered on a theme and will include stories and art projects, as well as the opportunity to explore featured library materials. Register May 4.
