Volunteers from the Harrisburg/West Shore Chess Club will be on hand to assist young chess players and match up competitors with equal skill level. Ages 7-13. Participants are asked to bring a chess set if possible but not required. No registration required.

Parents and children ages birth - 3 years are invited to meet once a month in a play group setting to chat and share experiences with other new parents.  Toys will be provided for children. Come make new friends and form important partnerships with other parents experiencing the same challenges. No registration necessary. Other sessions will be 10/14 and 11/11.

Help your little one prepare for a lifetime of learning by participating in this innovative program developed by our own Pollock Children’s Library staff.  

Children entering kindergarten in Fall 2016 will do kindergarten readiness activities, hear stories, have parachute fun, and work with colors, numbers, letters, sorting, rhyming and science. Kids may meet other future students and make early friendships! 

Children attending West Creek Hills and East Pennsboro Elementary in the East Pennsboro School District will meet the second Monday of the month. Sessions will be moved to Wednesday on holiday weeks. Registration starts Aug. 3 with the first session starting Sept 14. Specially trained dogs will be at the library to listen to children read aloud. This program is helpful to children who may be shy or reluctant to read aloud.  Children should bring along a book of their own choosing. For readers to age 12 with registration starting two weeks prior.

All ages are invited to join us for a movie and chat on the lawn lead by the Cetacean Society Int'l. Meet humpback whales with names, unique personalities and a fascination for people. Learn from the longest study of a single population of whales - begun 40 years ago. Their personalities shine on the carefully chosen video clips from the world’s largest whale behavior archive. You will meet the “most loved whale in the world,” the “friendliest whale in the world” and more. This journey into the mysterious ocean world will delight the youngest children and the oldest adults. No registration needed.

Adventure Crafts is a reading, craft, and activity program for children in grades 1-3. Each session will be centered on a theme and will include stories and art projects, as well as the opportunity to explore featured library materials. Learn to make simple puppets and explore puppet performance inspired by your favorite stories and fables.

Registration begins September 16 and will be open to 15 participants and their adult partners.

"Homework Helpers" are available most Thursdays, 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. during the school year. Teacher volunteers will be in the Fredricksen Library's Lower Lobby to offer individualized tutoring for students in grades 1-5. Tutors will be available to direct each student's study and homework completion, research and report writing, and/or test review.

 

Students, accompanied by an adult, should come to the Library prepared with their homework information, relevant textbooks, worksheets, directions, and supplies. A parent/responsible adult must stay in the library during the session and is welcome to consult with the tutor at the end of the session.

 

Fredricksen Library’s Homework Helpers is a free program, now in its fourth year.

Join Sovia Therapy at this Story Time and Music Class designed for all children, including those who may have challenges with traditional story times and/or have developmental delays.  Sensory play, read aloud stories, music and ASL interpretation will all be a part of the program, which will take place in a no ‘shush’ zone. Led by certified Music and Developmental Therapists, this full sensory experience is for children of all ages and developmental levels. Registration begins Sept. 19; adult must accompany child for session.
