WELCOME TO THE 2016 READING CHALLENGE!

Between now and the end of 2016, select 12 books to read. Your choices should each fulfill one of the following categories:

1. An electronic book

2. A nonfiction book

3. A book with an animal as the main character

4. A book you read with a friend

5. A book published in 2016

6. A book that is a mystery

7. A book that is historical fiction

8. A book that is science fiction or fantasy

9. A book that is steampunk or horror

10. A book recommended by a teacher

11. A graphic novel or graphic nonfiction

12. A favorite book you want to reread

13. A book whose cover you like

14. A funny book

15. A book that was a favorite of one of your parents when he/she was a child

16. A book that is part of a series

17. A book that was made into a movie

Select your books to fulfill the categories you choose. Books used for the challenge should be age appropriate. Each title can only fill one category. In order to fulfill the challenge, you will be reading 12 books before the end of December.

If you’d like to join us for one of our book clubs, you can use that title toward this challenge as well.

Record the book on your form and rate it on a 1-10 scale. (10 = EXCELLENT!, 1 = yuck)

The Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Block Play Parties for young children (3-6 years) and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  Blocks offer children an almost infinite variety of opportunities to express themselves, from constructing simple designs to veritable engineering feats of bridge building. Come join us for a morning of fun and creativity with blocks! Registration is required and limited to 10 children. Registration begins May 19. Sponsored by The Office of Commonwealth Libraries as part of Cruise into Kindergarten, M&T Bank, Centric Bank and Davis Vision Inc.

The Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Play K programs for children and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  The Play K curriculum allows children entering Kindergarten in the fall to "play Kindergarten" using materials from different "playscapes". Children will practice activities centered around a theme that are aligned with the PA Learning Standards and Kindergarten readiness skills such as using scissors, going over a calendar and taking turns. Registration is required and limited to 10 children. 

 

Registration begins May 19.

 

Additional one hour Play K sessions will be held on Thursday July 7th and 21st and August 4th and 18th from 10:00-11:00 am.  Sponsored by The Office of Commonwealth Libraries as part of Cruise into Kindergarten, M&T Bank, Centric Bank and Davis Vision Inc.


Friday, June 3, 2016 - 6:30pm

Experts from the Harrisburg/West Shore Chess Club will be on hand to assist young chess players and match up competitors with equal skill level. Ages 7-13. Participants are asked to bring a chess set if possible but not required. No registration required.

Join Sovia Therapy at this Story Time and Music Class designed for all children, including those who may have challenges with traditional story times and/or have developmental delays.  Sensory play, read aloud stories, music and ASL interpretation will all be a part of the program, which will take place in a no ‘shush’ zone. Led by certified Music and Developmental Therapists, this full sensory experience is for children of all ages and developmental levels. Registration begins May 21 for June; June 18 for July; July 23 for August; adult must accompany child for session.

Magician Mike Rose presents a magic show that is like no other magic shows.  Mike's new show, "SPORT-acular Magic!" is created specifically for libraries.  Impossible magic tricks, weird mind reading stunts, and off the wall comedy all themed around sports and fitness will make for some SPECTACULAR fun!  For all ages with no registration required.
