2015 PA One Book, Every Young Child Event

Join Greg Pizzoli, author of Number One Sam, this year’s PA One Book, Every Young Child selection, as he discusses being an author and illustrator. Following the program, the audience will be directed to the library's lower parking lot to meet and greet two Sprint Car drivers and their cars. No registration required.

Help your little one prepare for a lifetime of learning by participating in this innovative program developed by our own Pollock Children’s Library staff.  Children from Washington Heights, Lower Allen and Highland Elementary Schools are welcome. Children entering kindergarten in Fall 2015 will do kindergarten readiness activities, hear stories, have parachute fun, and work with colors, numbers, letters, sorting, rhyming and science. Kids may meet other future students and make early friendships! Sessions will be on Monday, but moved to Wednesday on holiday weeks. Registration starts Aug. 4th with the first session starting Sept. 22nd.

"Homework Helpers" are available most Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. during the school year. Teacher volunteers will be in the Fredricksen Library's Lower Lobby AND at the East Pennsboro Branch to offer individualized tutoring for students in grades 1-5. Tutors will be available to direct each student's study and homework completion, research and report writing, and/or test review.

 

Students, accompanied by an adult, should come to the Library prepared with their homework information, relevant textbooks, worksheets, directions, and supplies. A parent/responsible adult must stay in the library during the session and is welcome to consult with the tutor at the end of the session.

 

This year’s teachers include a specialist in ESL (English as a Second Language). The teachers enjoy working with students and making this a positive experience.

 

Fredricksen Library’s Homework Helpers is a free program, now in its third year.

Kids may meet other future students and make early friendships! Sessions will be on Monday, but moved to Wednesday on holiday weeks. Volunteers from the Harrisburg/West Shore Chess Club will be on hand to assist young chess players and match up competitors with equal skill level. Ages 7-13. Participants are asked to bring a chess set if possible but not required. No registration required.

Join Sovia Therapy at this Story Time and Music Class designed for all children, including those who may have challenges with traditional story times and/or have developmental delays.  Sensory play, read aloud stories, music and ASL interpretation will all be a part of the program, which will take place in a no ‘shush’ zone. Led by certified Music and Developmental Therapists, this full sensory experience is for children of all ages and developmental levels. Registration begins April 18; adult must accompany child.
