Children's Events @ Fredricksen

Candy's Kitchen

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of dedicating our staff kitchen in memory of our former Children’s Assistant, Candy Harm.  Candy worked at Fredricksen Library and West Shore Library, and at East Pennsboro Branch, for 26 years. During her employment, Candy began one of the most popular programs ever, Library for Lunch, which combined her dual interests of children’s literature and cooking.

We were grateful to receive many donations in Candy’s name when she passed away in October 2015.  Her love of cooking and her desire to want to offer cooking classes at Fredricksen, made the decision to use the money to transform our staff kitchen into Candy’s Kitchen an easy one.  In addition to the funds we received in her name, Mother Hubbard’s Cabinetry generously donated all the cabinetry and countertop work, the Friends of Fredricksen contributed funds to help finish the room and our own Coffee Corner offered to pay for the few remaining pieces.  The result is a beautiful space, designed by our Office Manager Lori Loss, which will allow us to cook food for events, enable staff to relax in a beautiful area between library tasks, and in general, feel at home here.   We were honored that nearly 60 members of Candy’s family, friends and current and former co-workers came to share in the unveiling of Candy’s Kitchen and see first-hand the wonderful space that will forever be in her name.

The Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Play K programs for children and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  The Play K curriculum allows children entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2017 to "play Kindergarten" using materials from 6 different "playscapes". Children will practice going over a calendar, doing activities centered around a theme that are aligned with the PA Learning Standards and Kindergarten readiness skills like using scissors and taking turns. We will also add a social component by having lunch at the library with our new friends! Please bring a lunch and we will eat and talk for the first half hour.

Registration begins Oct. 31. Sponsored by The Office of Commonwealth Libraries as part of Cruise into Kindergarten.
