Spring Story times! - 6-week sessions

March 13 through April 21 in the Pollock Children’s Library, Lower Level
Join us at these age appropriate programs that promote literacy and provide a fun first experience at the library. These story times will help increase children’s vocabulary, comprehension and ability to interact socially.  Watch for specific day and times.
Just Baby & Me Ages 0-2 with an adult, rhymes, songs and board books.
Monday  - 9:30 am, Tuesday - 10:15 am, Thursday - 9:30 am & 10:15 am, Friday - 11:00 am
Twos – Songs, rhymes and easy books for children age two with an adult.
Monday - 10:30 am, Tuesday - 9:30 am, Wednesday - 9:30 am & 10:15 am
Threes – Stories, songs and fingerplays for three year olds with an adult.
Tuesday - 11:00 am, Wednesday - 11:00 am, Friday - 10:15 am
Picture Book Time - Children ages 4 years-K sit by themselves for 30-45 minutes to listen to age appropriate stories, songs, and fingerplays.
Monday - 1:15 pm, Friday - 9:30 am
Registration is required and begins Feb. 27 for Just Baby & Me, Feb. 28 for Twos, Threes and Picture Book Time
 

Homework Helpers Club

This program is available for students in grades 1 through 5. Volunteer helpers are experienced educators ready to help with all subject areas.  Students are responsible to bring all textbooks, homework, instructions and related materials. A parent/caregiver must remain in the library during the instruction. There is no charge for this program.

Take a trip through American history with the American Girl Book Club. We will meet and discuss a different American Girl and learn about her time period each month.  Please read the book prior to attending; dolls are welcome but not required. Snack and craft included. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet with local resource professionals during each session on a variety of topics including child development, nutrition, speech, language and hearing and more!  Registration begins Feb 23 and space is limited.  All participants are encouraged to have a library card.

For aspiring artists ages 8-12! Do you dream of drawing? Dazzle your friends with your detailed doodles? Learn about different artists with this special exploration of art history! Children will explore a different artist and their work each month and then get messy with a craft.

Help your little one prepare for a lifetime of learning by participating in this innovative program developed by our own Pollock Children’s Library staff.  

Children entering kindergarten in Fall 2017 will do kindergarten readiness activities, hear stories, have parachute fun, and work with colors, numbers, letters, sorting, rhyming and science. Kids may meet other future students and make early friendships! 

Children attending  Shaull, Hampden, and Sporting Hill Elementary in the Cumberland Valley School District will meet the fourth Monday of the month. Sessions will be moved to Wednesday on holiday weeks. Registration starts Aug. 1 with the first session starting Sept 26. Sponsored by: M&T Bank, Centric Bank and Davis Vision, Inc.

The Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Play K programs for children and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  The Play K curriculum allows children entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2017 to "play Kindergarten" using materials from 6 different "playscapes". Children will practice going over a calendar, doing activities centered around a theme that are aligned with the PA Learning Standards and Kindergarten readiness skills like using scissors and taking turns. 
One hour Play K sessions will be held every other Tuesday February 14th thru April 25th  from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Registration begins January 31 and is limited to 10 children.

The Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Block Play Parties for young children (3-6 years) and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  Blocks offer children an almost infinite variety of opportunities to express themselves, from constructing simple designs to veritable engineering feats of bridge building. Come join us for a morning of fun and creativity with blocks!

One hour Block Parties will also be held on April 5 and May 17 from 9:30-10:30 am.  Registration is required and limited to 10 children.  Registration begins March 1, March 22 and May 3. Sponsored by The Office of Commonwealth Libraries as part of Cruise into Kindergarten.

Experts from the Harrisburg/West Shore Chess Club will be on hand to assist young chess players and match up competitors with equal skill level. Ages 7-13. Participants are asked to bring a chess set if possible but not required. No registration required.

In this two-part series parents will be learning the art of infant massage and be guided through instruction on how to massage their own babies. The class will be taught by Wendy Spicer, a certified infant massage instructor, from Pinnacle Health's Infant Development Program.  Understanding and beginning touch early in life can improve the quality of parenting and family life as well as promoting the well-being of the infant. The program contains such critical elements of bonding as eye-to eye contact, smiling, soothing vocal sounds, loving touch, caressing, smell, and mutual interaction. 

Infants under 1 year with caregiver are welcome. Bring a soft comfortable blanket to lay your baby on and dress baby in easy to remove clothing. Parents will receive a bottle of massage oil and stroke book.

Children attending West Creek Hills and East Pennsboro Elementary in the East Pennsboro School District will meet the second Monday of the month. Sessions will be moved to Wednesday on holiday weeks. The Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Play K programs for children and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  The Play K curriculum allows children entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2017 to "play Kindergarten" using materials from 6 different "playscapes". Children will practice going over a calendar, doing activities centered around a theme that are aligned with the PA Learning Standards and Kindergarten readiness skills like using scissors and taking turns. 
One hour Play K sessions will be held every other Tuesday February 14th thru April 25th  from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Registration begins January 31 and is limited to 10 children.

Grandparents play an important role in the lives of children and it's not always easy. Bring your grandchildren (ages 1 - 4) to the library for a morning of play and fun. Join us at Country Meadows Retirement Community for a story time that is open to those young and young at heart. This program will appeal to Birth – 6 years and loved ones.  Story times will be held the last Wednesdays of each month - Feb. 22, March 29, April 26 and May 31.

 

The story time will be held at Country Meadows, Building 2, Garden Room, 355 S. Sporting Hill Road, Mechanicsburg. No registration necessary.

Adventurer’s Club is a reading, craft, and activity program for children in grades 1-3 and their adult partners. Each session will be centered on a theme and will include stories and art projects, as well as the opportunity to explore featured library materials. Register beginning April 1.

The Pollock Children's Library will celebrate Pennsylvania's One Book, Every Young Child initiative with a story and craft program.  This year's book selection Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer will be featured.  For children ages 3 – 6. Registration is required and begins on April 14.

Take a trip through American history with the American Girl Book Club. We will meet and discuss a different American Girl and learn about her time period each month.  Please read the book prior to attending; dolls are welcome but not required. Snack and craft included. Register once for all three sessions starting February 28, for grades 3 & 4 only.

We will not have an art experience or resource person like in Family Play Workshop.  Children ages 1 to 3 1/2 and siblings birth to 5 are welcome.  Children over 5 are not permitted for safety reasons. Registration begins April 13.

For aspiring artists ages 8-12! Do you dream of drawing? Dazzle your friends with your detailed doodles? Learn about different artists with this special exploration of art history! Children will explore a different artist and their work each month and then get messy with a craft.

One Monday a month

Help your little one prepare for a lifetime of learning by participating in this innovative program developed by our own Pollock Children’s Library staff.  

Children entering kindergarten in Fall 2017 will do kindergarten readiness activities, hear stories, have parachute fun, and work with colors, numbers, letters, sorting, rhyming and science. Kids may meet other future students and make early friendships! 

Children attending Hoover Elementary in Camp Hill School District will meet the first Monday of the month. Sessions will be moved to Wednesday on holiday weeks. Registration starts Aug. 1 with the first session starting Aug. 29. Sponsored by: M&T Bank, Centric Bank and Davis Vision Inc.

 


Friday, May 5, 2017 - 6:30pm

6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Ruggaber Community Room, Lower Level

Experts from the Harrisburg/West Shore Chess Club will be on hand to assist young chess players and match up competitors with equal skill level. Ages 7-13. Participants are asked to bring a chess set if possible but not required. No registration required.
