WELCOME TO THE 2016 READING CHALLENGE!

Between now and the end of 2016, select 12 books to read. Your choices should each fulfill one of the following categories:

1. An electronic book

2. A nonfiction book

3. A book with an animal as the main character

4. A book you read with a friend

5. A book published in 2016

6. A book that is a mystery

7. A book that is historical fiction

8. A book that is science fiction or fantasy

9. A book that is steampunk or horror

Select your books to fulfill the categories you choose. Books used for the challenge should be age appropriate. Each title can only fill one category. In order to fulfill the challenge, you will be reading 12 books before the end of December.

If you’d like to join us for one of our book clubs, you can use that title toward this challenge as well.

Record the book on your form and rate it on a 1-10 scale. (10 = EXCELLENT!, 1 = yuck)

Help your little one prepare for a lifetime of learning by participating in this innovative program developed by our own Pollock Children’s Library staff.  

Children entering kindergarten in Fall 2016 will do kindergarten readiness activities, hear stories, have parachute fun, and work with colors, numbers, letters, sorting, rhyming and science. Kids may meet other future students and make early friendships! 

Children attending Highland, Washington Heights and Lower Allen Elementrary in the West Shore  School District will meet the third Monday of the month. Sessions will be moved to Wednesday on holiday weeks. Registration starts Aug. 3 with the first session starting Sept 21. Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Block Play Parties for young children (3-6 years) and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  Blocks offer children an almost infinite variety of opportunities to express themselves, from constructing simple designs to veritable engineering feats of bridge building. Come join us for a morning of fun and creativity with blocks! Registration is required and limited to 10 children.  Registration begins February 3rd.

February's crafting adventure is all about the spectacle of the BIG TOP!  When the circus comes to town, most of us look forward to the silly clowns, exciting animals and amazing acrobats!  Our young crafters will be making representations of these ever-popular attractions. Adventure Crafts is a reading, craft, and activity program for children in grades 1-3. Each session will be centered on a theme and will include stories and art projects, as well as the opportunity to explore featured library materials. Registration begins Feb. 3.

"Homework Helpers" are available most Thursdays, 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. during the school year. Teacher volunteers will be in the Fredricksen Library's Lower Lobby to offer individualized tutoring for students in grades 1-5. Tutors will be available to direct each student's study and homework completion, research and report writing, and/or test review.

 

Students, accompanied by an adult, should come to the Library prepared with their homework information, relevant textbooks, worksheets, directions, and supplies. A parent/responsible adult must stay in the library during the session and is welcome to consult with the tutor at the end of the session.

Fredricksen Library’s Homework Helpers is a free program, now in its fourth year.

Specially trained dogs will be at the library to listen to children read aloud. This program is helpful to children who may be shy or reluctant to read aloud.  Children should bring along a book of their own choosing. For readers to age 12 with registration starting two weeks prior.

Use your imagination, building skills, and design sense to create new space designs, circuitry projects, mobile creations, and more.  Participants collaborate as they work with various kits such as Snap Circuits, LittleBits Circuitry Kit, Ozobots, Roominate, Squishy Circuits, and Makey Makey Invention Kits in their projects and discover the ways in which circuits and design work. Join Sovia Therapy at this Story Time and Music Class designed for all children, including those who may have challenges with traditional story times and/or have developmental delays.  Sensory play, read aloud stories, music and ASL interpretation will all be a part of the program, which will take place in a no ‘shush’ zone. Led by certified Music and Developmental Therapists, this full sensory experience is for children of all ages and developmental levels. Registration begins February 20; adult must accompany child for session.

Fredricksen Library has received materials from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries to start a series of Block Play Parties for young children (3-6 years) and their adults through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.  Blocks offer children an almost infinite variety of opportunities to express themselves, from constructing simple designs to veritable engineering feats of bridge building. Come join us for a morning of fun and creativity with blocks! Registration is required and limited to 10 children.  One hour Block Parties will be held on Wednesdays, March 16th, April 6th and May 18th from 9:30-10:30 AM.  Registration is required and limited to 10 children.  Registration begins March 2, March 23 and May 4.

"Homework Helpers" are available most Thursdays, 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. during the school year. Teacher volunteers will be in the Fredricksen Library's Lower Lobby to offer individualized tutoring for students in grades 1-5. Tutors will be available to direct each student's study and homework completion, research and report writing, and/or test review.

 

Students, accompanied by an adult, should come to the Library prepared with their homework information, relevant textbooks, worksheets, directions, and supplies. A parent/responsible adult must stay in the library during the session and is welcome to consult with the tutor at the end of the session.

Fredricksen Library’s Homework Helpers is a free program, now in its fourth year.
