The Friends of Cleve J. Fredricksen Library held its Annual Meeting, Tuesday, January 20th, in the Ruggaber Community Room from 7 pm to 8 pm. Nominating Committee Janice Bolton, Margaret Gerhart and Diana Kerr announced that the 2014 Board members were willing to serve another term. Therefore, the slate of officers was voted on and approved as follows: Judy Metz Eagle, President; Diana Bermingham, Vice President; Barrett Sheridan, Secretary; Diane Myers, Treasurer; and Kathy Bard, Past President Liaison.
Executive Director Bonnie Goble and Human Resources Coordinator Wendy McClure both were present and gave updates on Fredricksen. A major topic of discussion included a preliminary explanation of new State laws concerning volunteers and the need for up to date criminal and child abuse history clearances with a possible FBI finger print clearance if the person has not resided in Pennsylvania for ten consecutive years.
Profits for the 2014 Ways and Means projects (two Book Sales, over $18,600 and our Silent Auction, $13,000 plus) were presented to the enjoyment of those present. The 2015 Friends’ Budget will be $33,670. Dates for fundraising events are as follows:
April Book Sale - the 23rd through the 26th
September Book Sale - the 24th through the 27th
Silent Auction - November 21st with pick up Saturday from 4 to 5 pm and 1 to 5 pm on Sunday, the 22nd.
At our annual meeting Friends of Fredricksen were presented with a challenge. If we raise $1,000 in dues during the months of January and February, an anonymous donor will match with $1,000 donated to our Friends’ organization. So, if you are planning to join Friends this year or if you have thought about joining the organization that raises funds to supply the library with those items and wishes not filled with our operating budget, this is your time. Join now and help us reach our challenge goal!

2014 Friends of Fredricksen Silent Auction
The Friends of Fredricksen Library and the East Pennsboro Branch thank all the businesses, patrons, volunteers, board members, library staff and the community for generously donating auction items, time and money. Because of you, this year’s Silent Auction raised over $12,000. This past year Friends were able to sponsor children’s programming, teen programs, and Book Pages, a monthly book review for patrons. We also helped fund the new lower level parking lot expansion. Thank you for helping us makes Fredricksen Library and East Pennsboro Branch Simply the Best! Thank you for your support of our donors and your contribution to the library!
The Friends of Fredricksen serves several functions:
- Raise funds to help our library meet the costs of special programming & new equipment
- Volunteer time at the library
- Advocate for library funding with local legislators when bills come before county & state officials

The profits from the semi-annual sales have been used for:
- The self-check unit in the Pollock Children’s Library
- Shelving units and other equipment requested by the Library staff
- Programs in the Pollock Children’s Library
- Teen events at Fredricksen
- Meeting our building fund pledge
When you leave your donations at the reference desk, the first step is a quick review by the staff to see if your item might meet a need in the circulating collection or be appropriate for the ongoing book sale. The majority of the books are then sorted by teams of volunteers from the Friends. Once the materials have been sorted, they are packed and stored until the week of the sale.
During the week of the sale, an army of volunteers is needed to erect tables, move books from storage on to the tables, arrange the books so that our shoppers can find the perfect item, and then staff the sale. Finally, when the sale is over, all remaining items are packed for distribution to others who can make use of them:
- East Pennsboro Friends for their sale
- Charitable organizations working with children and adults
- Overseas missions
- Day care centers
- Other libraries
The golden rule when considering a donation is “Would I give this to a Friend?”

Thank you for your help in making our book and media sales so successful. The Friends of Fredricksen Library is a 501(c)(3) organization, so your donations may be deductible on your federal income taxes.
Donation Station @ Fredricksen First Saturday of every month from 1 pm to 3 pm. The Friends of Fredricksen have established Donation Station on the first Saturday of every month from 1 pm to 3 pm to process the donation of books and media for our Spring and Fall Book sales. Volunteers will be able to assist unloading your donations. We hope to provide convenience to you, our donors, and streamline our process for donations. During Donation Station hours, please park on the Walnut Street side parking area at the lower level employee entrance door. Donations at all other times can be given at the reference desk.
